Storm Screens, Cable-Guided & Patio Shades · Salt-Air Tested

Three tiers of porch coverage.
One install crew. One family.

From bungee tie-down patio shades built in our Monroe, NC factory alongside our shutters, to Insolroll cable-guided screens for daily sun and privacy, to the MagnaTrack motorized hurricane-rated setup by Progressive Screens — all installed by the same crew, in a trade this family has been in since 1993. Hurricane-rated is our highest ticket and the best long-horizon value for front-facing homes; cable-guided and bungee tie-down cover what most porches actually need.

Exterior storm screens on a Kingston Plantation home in North Myrtle Beach, installed by A Shade Above Coastal.
Trusted by the Carolinas Since 1993 · Authorized Insolroll & Progressive Screens Dealer · ★★★★★ 4.9 / 60+ Reviews

Exterior shading on the coast comes in three real tiers — and they're different products, not the same screen at different prices. Bungee tie-down patio shades are the entry option — and the only one of the three we build ourselves in our Monroe, NC workshop, using outdoor-rated screen fabric, cut and finished to fit your openings. Operated with a metal chain, secured at the bottom with bungee tie-downs into your porch framework. About 60% of the patios we install every year are these. They're the honest answer for a back porch that needs basic shade and bug screening.

Insolroll cable-guided screens are the middle tier — reseller product, not shop-built. Exterior fabric guided by side cables (not a rigid track) and operated either with a deploy pole or a motor. These are not hurricane-rated — they're for sun, privacy, and daily comfort, not 90mph wind. Insolroll quality fabric, just without the engineered storm track that defines the premium product.

MagnaTrack by Progressive Screens is the premium tier — reseller, and the only one of the three that's hurricane-rated. The patented magnetic side track is what locks the screen rigid in 90+ mph wind so it can't pull out of the channel. Motorized (deploy with a remote, app, or smart-home integration), eligible for wind-mitigation insurance discounts on most coastal policies, and the highest-ticket install on this page. Best long-horizon value for front-facing porches and channel-side decks. We walk every opening of your house and tell you what's actually right for it — and we're straight about which tier the budget supports.

MagnaTrack™ Exterior Screen

The magnetic side track is what makes it storm-rated.

Watch the screen seat itself into the magnetic guide. That's what keeps the fabric rigid in high wind instead of flexing out of the channel like a regular roller shade.

MagnaTrack motorized exterior screen — patented magnetic side track holds the fabric rigid in 100+ mph wind loads.

Three Tiers of Exterior Coverage

Hurricane-rated, motorized cable-guided, or shop-built bungee tie-down — we walk the house and pick what fits each opening.

We don't sell one product and bend every house to fit. Three real product lines, picked per opening based on storm exposure, budget, and how often you'll actually use them.

MagnaTrack by Progressive Screens

The premium tier — and the only one of the three that's hurricane-rated. Motorized exterior screens with a patented magnetic side track: the magnets lock the screen rigid in 90+ mph wind so it can't blow out of the channel. Roll up out of sight when you don't need them; deploy at the push of a button when a storm's coming. Best for front-facing porches, lanais, and channel-side decks. Eligible for wind-mitigation insurance credits on most coastal policies.

Cable-Guided Screens by Insolroll

The middle tier. Exterior screens guided by side cables rather than a rigid track. Not hurricane-rated — they're for sun, privacy, insect screening, and casual wind. Comes two ways: manual (pole-deploy from the ground) or motorized. Same Insolroll fabric quality as MagnaTrack, just without the magnetic side-track that makes the premium tier storm-rated. The right call when the opening needs daily shade and privacy but doesn't see direct front-line storm exposure.

Bungee Tie-Down Patio Shades built in our Monroe, NC factory

The entry tier — and the only one of the three we build ourselves. Custom-sized in the same Monroe, NC workshop as our shutters, using outdoor-rated screen fabric we cut and finish to fit your exact porch openings. Operated with a metal chain (rolls up and down like an oversize porch roller shade) and secured at the bottom with bungee tie-downs that hook into your porch framework. Not storm-rated, but the most common install we do — if we hang 100 patios this year, about 60 are bungee tie-downs. Same family making them since 1993.

Where They Go

Common Grand Strand and Brunswick County openings.

Channel-side porches

Cherry Grove channel cottages, Tilghman, Heron Pointe. MagnaTrack on the wind-facing side, Insolroll cable-guided elsewhere. Cuts the wind, cuts the bugs, rolls up when you want the view back.

Oceanfront balconies

Kingston, Barefoot, Crescent Shores condos. MagnaTrack motorized screens controlled from the unit. Hit one button, deploy the whole balcony. Insurance discount-eligible on most carriers.

Back-porch shade & bug screening

Most ground-floor patios on the Strand. Bungee tie-down patio shades — the entry option, and the one we build ourselves in Monroe, NC using outdoor-rated screen fabric. Custom-sized to your openings, metal-chain operation, bungee bottom-secured.

Daily sun & privacy on a covered porch

The middle of the catalog — Insolroll cable-guided screens. Manual pole-deploy or motorized. Not storm-rated, but the right call when the opening needs daily afternoon shade and a privacy screen on a busy street.

Historic cottages

Cherry Grove's older builds and the cottages out on Ocean Drive. MagnaTrack tucks into a small headbox under the eave — the period look stays intact, hurricane-rated storm coverage drops in 90 seconds.

Outdoor kitchens

The grilling station you don't want to disassemble every fall. A motorized screen wall drops over the whole bay in a couple of seconds.

Storm-Screen Questions

The ones we hear most at the showroom.

What is a MagnaTrack hurricane screen?
MagnaTrack is a motorized exterior screen by Progressive Screens. The screen fabric runs in a side track held in place by powerful magnets — so when wind hits it, the screen stays rigid and locked instead of flexing or pulling out of the track like cheaper storm screens. Most coastal homes here use them on porches, lanais and channel-side decks because they're hurricane-rated when down and roll up out of sight when you don't need them. It's the only one of our three exterior-shading product tiers that's storm-rated.
What's the difference between the three product tiers?
Three real products, not the same screen at different prices. Bungee tie-down patio shades are the entry tier and the only one we build ourselves — manufactured in our Monroe, NC workshop using outdoor-rated screen fabric, in the same factory where we build our plantation shutters. Operated with a metal chain (rolls up and down) and secured at the bottom with bungee cords tied to the porch framework. About 60% of our patio installs are these. Insolroll cable-guided screens are the middle tier — reseller product, fabric guided by side cables, operated either with a deploy pole or a motor; not hurricane-rated, but the right call for daily sun, privacy, and bug screening on a covered porch. MagnaTrack by Progressive Screens is the premium tier — reseller, and the only one that's hurricane-rated. Motorized, magnetic-locked side track that holds rigid in 90+ mph wind, eligible for insurance wind-mitigation discounts on most coastal policies. Hurricane-rated is our highest ticket and the best long-horizon value for front-facing or channel-side homes; cable-guided and bungee tie-down cover what most porches actually need.
Do hurricane screens qualify for an insurance discount?
Often yes. Many SC and NC coastal homeowner policies offer wind-mitigation credits for impact-rated hurricane screens. We can give you the product spec sheet and your insurance agent does the rest. Discount amounts vary by carrier and county.
How are hurricane screens different from regular roller shades?
Two big differences: the fabric (heavier, wind-rated, sometimes impact-tested) and the side track (rigid magnetic or zip-track instead of an open channel). Regular roller shades flex and pull out under wind load. Hurricane screens are engineered to hold a flat, locked surface in 100+ mph wind.
What's the lead time?
Typical lead time is 6 to 8 weeks. Motorized screens take longer than manual because the motors are matched to each opening. We recommend ordering in spring — hurricane season runs June through November and lead times stretch as it gets closer.
Can hurricane screens be controlled from my phone?
Yes. Our motorized screens run on Somfy and PowerView platforms — both work with iOS and Android apps, and integrate with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Control4. You can deploy all your screens from one button when a storm's coming.
Will hurricane screens block the view?
When they're up (rolled into the headbox), you see nothing — the cassette tucks under the soffit or eave. When they're down, the open-weave fabrics let you see out at about the level of a window screen, but block most direct sun and rain. Storm-rated solid fabrics are also available when you want full coverage.
